In his career he was councilman of his hometown, a provincial deputy in the province of Buenos Aires and local MP for the Radical government of Arturo Illia. In the early years of militancy was jailed for the Liberating Revolution and in 1966 was detained for a short time by the dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Ongania.
Three months before the 1976 military coup, Alfonsin was one of the personalities who founded the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (APDH). This association, which was one of the first called to confront "Triple A", played an important role in defending human rights during the process.
